At 1620 Workwear, we believe real work is about more than just a job—it’s about purpose, persistence, and putting in the effort where it counts. That’s exactly what Chris Cayer, a full-time municipal worker from Cheshire, Connecticut, brings to both his day job and his side mission: rescuing pigs through a nonprofit animal sanctuary called Clover’s Pig Preserve.
Co-founded with his wife, Cara, Clover’s Pig Preserve is dedicated to providing a safe haven for pigs rescued from abuse, abandonment, or neglect.
“This isn’t our full-time job. But it takes everything we’ve got. And it’s worth it,” Chris says.
Based in Wolcott, Connecticut, Clover’s Pig Preserve currently cares for 15 pigs—11 living on the property, with others in foster care. Many came from heartbreaking situations: abandoned homes, hoarding cases, or livestock auctions. Each pig at the sanctuary has a name, a backstory, and a second chance at life.
“They’re intelligent, loyal, and clean animals,” says Chris. “But they’re often misunderstood. There’s a huge need for responsible pig rescue.”
Chris and Cara have built more than just pens and shelters—they’ve built a support system. From daily animal care to running a long-distance transport operation they call the Swine Shuttle, they’re tackling a problem few others are willing to take on.
Running a nonprofit pig sanctuary while holding a full-time job takes serious commitment. Chris works long shifts for the public works department, then heads straight to the farm for another few hours of feeding, cleaning, and checking on the animals. Weekends often mean full days of infrastructure projects—installing fencing, maintaining shelters, and winterizing barns.
“It’s physical, dirty work—but the pigs rely on us. This is their home, and we treat it like ours.”
Chris and Cara aren’t just running a nonprofit. They’re filling a critical gap in the world of animal rescue—showing what can happen when people take ownership of a cause and follow through, day in and day out.
Whether Chris is handling municipal roadwork or knee-deep in mud at the rescue, he needs gear that’s tough, comfortable, and built for long hours. That’s why he wears 1620 Workwear.
“Public works has me bending, lifting, and climbing all day—I need workwear that moves with me and doesn’t wear out,” he says. “And on the farm, especially in winter, you can’t afford gear that quits. 1620 just works.”
