BEHIND THE BLUEPRINT: How Matt Lear of Lear Construction Builds Trust, Craftsmanship and Legacy

At 1620 Workwear, we build American-made gear for the people who show up every day and do the hard things right. Builders. Remodelers. Craftsmen. Skilled trades workers who know that quality craftsmanship is what matters most.

That’s why we’re proud to spotlight Matt Lear, owner of Lear Construction, a New England-based general contracting firm that specializes in custom high-end residential remodels and new construction. With 18 years in the trades and five years as a business owner, Matt’s built his reputation on craftsmanship, honesty, and a commitment to doing the job right — the first time.

“We’re in the customer service industry at the end of the day. If a client wants something, we’ll find a way to get it done.”

From Wrenches to Remodels: The Journey to Lear Construction

Matt’s path to owning a successful construction business didn’t begin with blueprints or framing hammers. He started in the automotive industry, studied business in college, and worked in high-end hardscaping before discovering his passion for building.

“I started working for my father-in-law one winter. That turned into a career. I didn’t know a lot at the time, but I had a feel for tools — and once I started, I loved it.”

That love turned into Lear Construction, a team of skilled craftsmen handling everything from frame to finish on challenging, design-forward residential projects. Whether it’s a full-gut interior remodel or a custom build from the ground up, Matt thrives in complexity — and he’s built a team that does, too.

Building a Strong Team (and a Stronger Jobsite)

Ask Matt what the secret is to a smooth jobsite, and he’ll tell you it’s not just tools and timelines — it’s people. Knowing how to schedule efficiently, playing to team members’ strengths, and setting everyone up for success is a cornerstone of how Lear Construction operates.

“I’ve been lucky to work with great guys and great subs. But it’s all about coordination and knowing where people thrive.”

As the company prepares to take on its first self-funded spec house, Matt remains committed to growing his crew — carefully. Because scaling isn’t just about more jobs. It’s about maintaining quality craftsmanship and keeping customer satisfaction at the core.

Saying Yes to the Client, Without Compromising the Craft

On a recent full-home renovation project, the original scope expanded fast — but Matt didn’t flinch. From staircases to paint, trim to cabinetry, the clients wanted it all.

“She called me a yes guy — in the best way. And it’s true. We’re here to create exactly what the client wants, and make the process as easy for them as possible.”

That approach has earned Lear Construction a reputation for flexibility, reliability, and communication — three values that never go out of style in residential construction.

Why 1620 Workwear Is a Must on Every Job

When we asked Matt what tool he can’t live without, the answer wasn’t a power tool — it was his team first, and then his workwear. As someone constantly bending, kneeling, and climbing, mobility and durability are key.

“You need gear that moves with you, not against you. I like stretch, I like comfort — and I need work pants that hold up.”

Looking Ahead: More Craftsmanship, More Customization

Matt’s vision for Lear Construction includes deeper control over the build process — from adding an in-house millwork division to expanding their role in custom design. It’s all about delivering the best product, faster, and without compromise.

“We’d love to do more of the millwork ourselves. To produce the custom pieces our clients want — and keep everything under one roof.”

That drive to improve is what makes Matt a perfect example of the 1620 mindset: never satisfied, always pushing forward.

Business Lessons from the Field

Running a construction company in today’s market isn’t easy. Tariffs, material costs, and labor shortages are real. But Matt’s advice? Communicate early, prepare for the unexpected, and surround yourself with the right team — on and off the site.

“I got a lawyer, a bookkeeper, and an accountant on day one. You need people around you who know what they’re doing, and who have your back.”

That mindset — of treating clients like family and preparing for every challenge — is why Lear Construction continues to grow and earn trust on every job.

Built to Work. Built to Last.

Matt’s story isn’t just about remodeling homes — it’s about building a reputation, a team, and a future he’s proud of. From snowboarding with his son to boxing with his daughter, his life outside the job is fueled by the same drive and passion that powers his workday.

“If I wasn’t doing this? Maybe I’d be a bartender on a beach somewhere. But I’d still be building something — with my hands.”

We’re proud to support builders like Matt with American-made construction workwear that goes the distance — from jobsite to weekend, season after season.
